The Teaching and Cultivation of the French Language in England during Tudor and Stuart Times

Note 611 — Chapter VII

Reading edition

Addison was well acquainted with French literature and criticism. He frequently quotes Boileau, Racine, Corneille, and also Bouhours and Lebossu. His Tragedy of Cato is closely modelled on the French pattern. See A. Beljame, Le Public et les hommes de lettres en Angleterre au 18e siècle, 1897, p. 316.
