The Salvation Army in Switzerland

Note 38 — Chapter VIII

Reading edition

While quoting the above the Geneva journals come to hand which give the results of the elections for several of the Cantonal Governments. M. Héridier has not been re-elected. It is reported that even his own supporters have found some of his recent acts too authoritative, while his illegalities and tyrannies have been pronounced by the Constitutional party to be beyond endurance. This is followed by his election by the Grand Council of Geneva as one of the two deputies which the Canton returns to the Swiss Conseil des Etats (a body answering to the American Senate). This election is in direct defiance of the previous popular vote, and proves that the governing persons now in office are more in favour of arbitrary government than the common people.
