Note 1283 — Chapter X · THE ORGANIZATION OF THE COMITIA CENTURIATA
Reading edition
To the time of Marius the soldiers were still drawn from the census classes; Polyb. vi. 19. 2; Sall. Iug. 86. The first class was distinguished from the rest by its armor, Polyb. vi. 23. 15. That the political classes likewise rested on the census is proved by Cic. Leg. iii. 3. 7; 19. 44; Gell. vi (vii). 13; xv. 27. 5; Ascon. in Pis. 16. The agrarian law of 111 (CIL. i. 200. 37) implies a property qualification of the class mentioned (note above). These citations dispose of the hypothesis of Plüss, Centurienverf. 36 ff., 80, which represents the classes of this period as consisting of groups of tribes resting partly on the census but mainly on differences of rank.
