Tourbillion, from tourbillon, like postillion, from postillon, the i being inserted to approximate the pronunciation of the French. In pavilion, from pavillon, and vermilion, from vermillon, one l is dropped; so in battalion, from bataillon; while medallion, from medaillon, retains the ll.
