Note 31 — Chapter XVIII · SILICON AND THE OTHER ELEMENTS OF THE FOURTH GROUP

George Kamensky translation

If germanium or germanium sulphide be heated in a stream of hydrochloric acid, it forms a volatile liquid, boiling at 72°, which Winkler regarded as germanium chloride, GeCl2, or germanium chloroform, GeHCl3. It is decomposed by water, forming a white substance, which may perhaps be the hydrate of germanious oxide, GeO, and acts as a powerfully reducing agent in a hydrochloric acid solution.
