Note C — GLOSSARY[C]
Reading edition
In the Turkish and Persian languages the vowels are frequently silent and the characters do not stand for single consonants, but represent combinations of sounds as in short-hand, so that the same word is spelled in a great variety of ways when it is translated into English; therefore, the result is rather misleading, and each person must, to a certain extent, interpret the phonetic spelling to suit himself.
