The Plague of Lust, Vol. 2 (of 2)

Note 13 — Second Part.

Reading edition

Suidas explains μάργος by μαινόμενος (being mad) and Hesychius also by ὑβριστὴς (recklessly insolent), a word we have already learned from repeated examples to recognize as signifying unnatural lust. Clement of Alexandria, Paedag., bk. (And gluttony, i. e. madness in connection with the gullet, and greediness, i. e. intemperance in connection with food, in other words as the name implies, madness as to the belly; for μάργος means a madman).
