Reading edition

The word chocolate is derived from the Mexican word chocolatl. The Mexicans, at the time of the conquest, used cacao-beans as money. The grandees of the Aztec Court ate chocolate made of the ground bean mixed with Indian corn and rocou (vide W. H. Prescottʼs “Hist. of the Conquest of Mexico”).

Chocolate was first used in Spain in 1520; in Italy in 1606; in England in 1657, and in Germany in 1700.
