Note 14 — Chapter IV
Reading edition
The bird here referred to (Collocalia troglodites) is a specie of swift; the nests, composed of a gelatinous secretion from the salivary glands in the mouths of the birds, sell at high price almost their weight in gold, when fresh and clean. The best nests are obtained on the precipitous sides of the Peñon de Coron, between [290n] Culion and Busuanga, where the natives gather them at no little personal risk. The nests are known to commerce as salangana. (U. S. Gazetteer of Philippine Islands, pp. 170, 482.)
