The Pavement Masters of Siena (1369-1562)

Note 19 — Chapter II · THE PAVEMENT

Reading edition

It is generally supposed that this ceremony was performed by Pope Alexander III. (Bandinelli), but the tradition is unsupported by documentary evidence hitherto obtainable. This same Pope laid the foundation stone of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris in 1163. See Paris als Kunststätte, Georges Riat. (Seemann. Leipzig and Berlin, 1901.)
