The Origin of Tyranny

Note 725 — Chapter V · Lydia

Reading edition

Strabo XIII. 627; cp. Athen. XIII. 573a, “Clearchus in Book I. of his Erotica says Gyges, king of Lydia, ... when (his mistress) died, gathered all the Lydians of the land and raised what is called the tomb of the hetaera.” This looks like the version preserved by Strabo with details borrowed from Herodotus: note that the work is here ascribed to Gyges.
