Note that he probably began his career at a small town near Canopus, E. de Rougé (quoting Brugsch), Inscr. Hist. Pianchi ap. Maspero, Bibl. Égypt. XXIV. p. 290. De Rougé notes that Tafnekht’s name has no cartouche and no qualification announcing royal birth and from these facts argues that he was of comparatively humble origin.
