The Origin of Tyranny

Note 553 — Chapter IV · Egypt

Reading edition

B.S.A. V. pp. 41 n. 2, 48; J.H.S. XXV. p. 107. In 1899 there was found in Petrie’s “Great Temenos” a fourth century Egyptian inscription that speaks of “Pi-emro which is called Naukratis.” This is, however, pace Hogarth, J.H.S. XXV. p. 106, evidence not for but against thinking of Piemro Naukratis as a double town like Buda-Pesth rather than as a bilingual like Swansea Abertawe.
