It is forcing the sense of Herodotus’ words to regard them, as does Petrie, Nauk. I. p. 4, as proof positive of a pre-Amasis occupation. Still less is Kirchhoff justified (Stud. Gr. Alph.4 p. 47) in regarding them as proving that there were no Greeks in Naukratis before the reign of Amasis.
