The Negroland of the Arabs examined and explained

Note 188 — LEMLEM.

Reading edition

The l of the Arabs and r of the Africans so often displace each other, that the change of Lemlem into Remrem is quite regular. In Arabic writing Remrem is hardly distinguishable from Demdem, which might therefore have originated in the ambiguous characters of the former name. But it will be shown further on, that in Marra (adjoining the original Demdem) the r is often changed into d.
