Silla is fourteen days from Tomboktú by land, and a month by water. From these extremes it is easy to derive the distance assigned above. Sidi Hamed (in Riley’s Narrative, p. 334) going from Tomboktú to Houssa, first travelled six days along the river, a little south of east till he came to hills, where the stream turned southwards.
