Note 693 — Chapter III · THE LEGATION OF PANDULF 1219–1221
Reading edition
The warden of Marlborough castle throughout John’s reign was Hugh de Neville; see Pat. Rolls Joh. and Close Rolls, vol. i., passim, the latter from p. 16 b (1205) onwards. John “de Turri” appears as its constable on the morrow of Magna Charta (Close Rolls, vol. i. p. 214 b), no doubt as deputy for Hugh, who was at Runnimede with the king. It was Hugh who surrendered the place to Louis in 1216; Hist. Ducs, pp. 175, 176.
