Note 552 — Chapter XXIV · PLAYERS OF INTERLUDES

Reading edition

The earliest record of plays at inns which I have noticed is in 1557, when some Protestants were arrested and their minister burnt for holding a communion service in English on pretence of attending a play at the Saracen’s Head, Islington (Foxe, Acts and Monuments, ed. Cattley, viii. 444).
