Note 463 — Chapter XXIII · MORALITIES, PUPPET-PLAYS, AND PAGEANTS

Reading edition

Hone, 230, describes a ‘gallantee show’ of the Prodigal Son and of Noah’s Ark with a scene of ‘Pull Devil, Pull Baker,’ showing the judgement upon a baker who gave short weight (cf. the cut in Morley, 356), seen by him in London in 1818. This was an exhibition of ombres chinoises rather than a puppet-play proper.
