Note 289 — Chapter XX · THE SECULARIZATION OF THE PLAYS

Reading edition

Cf. p. 74. By the fifteenth century lay performers appear even in the ritual Quem quaeritis. An Augsburg version of 1487 (Milchsack, 129) concludes ‘Permittitur tamen aliis, qui forsan huiusmodi personas [i.e. ‘sacerdotes’ et ‘cantores’] non habent, ut cum aliis personis et etiam moribus honestis tamen et discretis, huiusmodi visitationem sepulchri exequantur.’ See also the jest of Tyll Ulenspiegel with the parson’s concubine who played the angel, quoted by Pearson, ii. 308.
