Note 63 — Chapter XVIII · LITURGICAL PLAYS

Reading edition

Milchsack, 128, 135; cf. Meyer, 64. The Ordo Augustensis of 1487 directs that a procession shall go from the sepulchre ‘per ambitum vel cimeterium ... usque ad ultimam ianuam, quae claudatur.’ Here the Tollite portas dialogue is held with the ‘levita iunior, vel alius in figura diaboli grossa voce.’ On the other hand, in the Ordo Wirceburgensis of 1564 the procession knocks at the door from inside, and the respondent ‘loco Sathanae’ is without.
