Note 570 — Chapter VIII · THE MAY-GAME
Reading edition
The May-game is probably intended by the ‘Whitsun pastorals’ of Winter’s Tale, iv. 4. 134, and the ‘pageants of delight’ at Pentecost, where a boy ‘trimmed in Madam Julias gown’ played ‘the woman’s part’ (i. e. Maid Marian) of Two Gentlemen of Verona, iv. 4. 163. Cf. also W. Warner, Albion’s England, v. 25:
‘At Paske began our Morrise, and ere Penticost our May.’
