Note 383 — Chapter VIII · THE MEETING AT BAYONNE AND THE SECOND WAR. [June, 1565–March, 1568.]

Reading edition

Had Coligny’s proposal to stop Alva’s march been adopted, France might have been saved much misery; for among other things it would have satisfied the craving for war felt by that restless nation: “A quoi (sc. la guerre) la plûpart étaient portés par le génie de la nation, qui ne saurait demeurer en repos.” Vie de Coligny, p. 319.
