Note 661 — Chapter XIII · THE FESTIVAL OF BLOOD. [August and September, 1572.]

Reading edition

De Statu Religionis, iv. 33. Guise also said “qu’on avait fait plus qu’il ne voulait ... qu’il n’en voulait qu’à l’amiral.” Mélanges: Journ. de Leipsic (June, 1693), p. 293. This is confirmed by a sort of newsletter from Paris, preserved in the Record Office (MSS. France, September, 1572.) “For the admiral’s death he was glad; but he thought for the rest that the king had put such to death as, if it pleased him, might have done good service.”
