It is to be remarked that according to the first work which makes mention of the Man with the Iron Mask, the prisoner was conducted to the Isles Sainte-Marguerite, and there confided to Saint-Mars. This is the Mémoires Secrets pour servir à l’Histoire de Perse, from which we have reproduced the entire passage in Chapter VI. of the present work (see p. 69, ante).
