The loyal mountaineers of Tennessee

Note 47 — Chapter XVI

Reading edition

Note.—One of them relates: “Whenever any of us could get off duty, we would stroll over to where the teamsters were feeding their mules; should the teamsters be gone, the mules invariably lost their rations. Frequently the kernels of corn that the mules and horses could not help losing, were picked up out of the dirt and eaten by the nearly famished troops.”
