Reading edition
Note.—At a reception given Gen. Burnside, January, 1864, at Boston, by the Second Massachusetts Infantry, the General in the course of his speech, told how he asked a rebel prisoner four or five days after the attack on Fort Sanders why Gen. Longstreet did not make a second one. “Well,” said the prisoner “General, I will tell you. Our men just swear that they are never going into that slaughter pen again, and when they won’t go, the ball won’t roll.”
