Note 223 — Chapter XII · CAMBRIDGE—1871 TO 1879.
Reading edition
There was found amongst his papers a scrap on which he had written, in pencil, the whole of Shelley’s “Ode to the West Wind,” in all probability from memory, and as a distraction from anxiety or from severer study. His note-books, one of which he always carried with him, are full of the most miscellaneous jottings, plans of works, solutions of problems, extracts in prose and verse, etc.
