The letters of Hart Crane, 1916-1932

Note 70 — PART FOUR Mexico (1931-1932) (continued 2)

Reading edition

The manuscript of “The Broken Tower” alluded to here was apparently never received by Mr. Zabel or Poetry (Chicago), of which he was an editor. A letter from Mr. Zabel, dated April 24, 1932, in response to this note from Crane, has been found; it explicitly states that the poem in question was not received either by Harriet Monroe or himself. It is of interest that Crane’s ms. copy of the poem is dated March 25, 1932.
