Note 101 — JOURNAL.
Reading edition
On Feb. 11th, 1884, General Gordon telegraphed from Berber to Sir Evelyn Baring: “I would not, if I were supreme, try again any Egyptian forces at Suakin, but would engage 3000 Turkish troops in British pay. That would settle the affair. It would be sufficient for the Padishah’s troops to appear to cause a collapse of all fanatical feeling.”—Ed.
