Buffalo hides. The earlier explorers referred to the buffalo (Bison americanus) under various cognomens. Boeuf sauvage, was the name given to it by Du Pratz; the Canadian voyageurs termed it simply le boeuf. See Allen, History of the American Bison, 1877.
