Note 592 — Chapter XII · THE LATER REIGN OF WILLIAM IN NORMANDY.[159] 1051–1066. (continued 2)

Reading edition

William of Poitiers calls Margaret the daughter of Herbert (103), but he afterwards (105) corrects the mistake and calls her “germana.” It is plain from Orderic (u. s.) that she was the daughter of Hugh and sister of Herbert. Benoît (35790) erroneously makes her only his half-sister;

“Herbert aveit une soror

Devers sa mere; esteit Tieise.”

The “Tieise” comes from some misunderstanding of the “Teutonum partes” in William of Poitiers. William has much to say about her virtues and early death; “Hæc generosa virgo, nomine Margarita, insigni specie, decentior fuit omni margaritâ.” This seems to be an earlier use of the name than I had thought in vol. i. p. 522, as this Margaret could hardly have been called after the daughter of the Ætheling Eadward.
