Note 1786 — Chapter VI · PASTORAL LIFE.

Reading edition

The following picture by Milton almost seems to be designed to form a contrast to the above:

As when from mountain-tops the dusky clouds

Ascending, while the north wind sleeps, o’erspread

Heaven’s cheerful face, the lowring element

Scowls o’er the darken’d landscape snow or shower;

If chance the radiant sun, with farewell sweet,

Extend his evening beam, the fields revive,

The birds their notes renew, and bleating herds

Attest their joy, that hill and valley rings.

Parad. Lost, ii. 488, sqq.

Iliad θ. 559, sqq. Here shepherd, observes the Scholiast, is used for herdsman. Ποιμήν εἶπεν ἀντὶ τοῦ βουκόλος διὰ νυκτὸς γὰρ αἱ βόες νέμονται, in loc. i. 238.
