Note 267 — Chapter XLIV · A.D. 1800-1885. THE JEWS IN AFRICA, AMERICA, AND ASIA.—CONCLUSION.

Reading edition

Warburton argues that not only did our Lord never declare that the Jewish Temple should not be rebuilt, but that He even implied that it would be, when He said (St. Luke xxi. 24), ‘Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.’ But this is to mistake the meaning of the Greek phrase Ἄχρις οὗ, ἔως οὗ. These denote a state of things up to a given point, but determine nothing as to what will follow. See Chrysostom on St. Matt. i. 25 etc.
