Note 18 — Chapter VII

Reading edition

— This Father Gerard of the seventeenth century was the second son of Sir Thomas Gerard, of Byrn, Lancashire. He was an acquaintance of the Wards, of Mulwith, Newby, and Givendale, most probably, for he was the early and life-long friend of Mary Ward. — See the “Life of Mary Ward,” by Mary Catherine Elizabeth Chambers (Burns & Oates).
