The Greek Romances of Heliodorus, Longus and Achilles Tatius

Note 8 — BOOK VII.

Rowland Smith translation

The events of this romance are supposed to take place when Asia was still subject to the Persian Empire, but Tatius borrows his judicial forms from those in use among the Greeks. He describes the πρoέδρος to be of royal extraction, probably because cases of blood were tried before that archon, who was styled βασιλεύς.—Jacobs.
