Note 11 — BOOK IV.
Rowland Smith translation
ἲυγγα. Properly the bird called the "wryneck." It was sacred to Venus, and much used in love incantations, especially to recall the alienated affections of a beloved object. It was employed fastened to a wheel, by turning which, the effect was supposed to be produced. It also means the magical wheel itself.—Hickie's Theocritus, see Theoc. Idyll. 11.
