Theoc. Idyll, xx. 28. enumerates these instruments:—

Άδὺ δέ μοι τὸ μέλισμα, καὶ ἢv σύριγγι μελίσδω, Κἤν αὐλῶ λαλεώ, κἢν δώνακι, κἢν πλαγιαύλῳ—

The πλαγίαύλος resembled the German flute.
