In. Bk. viii., 98, Herodotus gives an account of the Persian system of estafette—comparing it to the torch race:—"Kατάπερ Ἔλλησι ἡ λαμπαδηφορίη, τὴν τῷ Ἡφαίστῳ επιτέλεουσι." See also, Xen. Cyrop. viii. 6, 17.
