The Great Musicians

Note 19 — PURCELL.

Reading edition

Dr. Burney is particularly severe in condemning Blow's "crudites and violations of rule," and prints four pages of examples of Blow's sins; but there can be little doubt that a musician of the present day would regard the faults as mere spots on the sun of Blow's splendid music. Those who care to see what Blow could write should look at the anthems, "I was in the Spirit," and "I beheld, and lo."
