Note 148 — Chapter VII · Prince Rupert in Lancashire.
Reading edition
For a full and thoroughly sound discussion of this incident, vide "Discourse" note, pp. 134-142. The only possible doubt of Derby's innocence of the crime is that the charge is made with great detail by the author of the "Discourse," who is an unusually impartial writer, and had, moreover, a high opinion of Derby.
