The Grateful Dead

Note 22 — Chapter V · The Grateful Dead and The Ransomed Woman.

Reading edition

In Transylvanian,22 and more clearly in Gaelic and Breton III.,23 a tendency has been remarked to introduce the children of the hero as part of the gains which he is asked to divide with the thankful ghost. In a series of tales belonging to the general type The Grateful Dead + The Ransomed Woman this tendency has been accentuated so far that it seems best to group them together, because of their approach to the theme of The Two Friends. Since an actual combination of this motive with The Grateful Dead in its simple form is found in only three variants, all of them literary, it will perhaps be best to discuss the relationship of the main to the minor theme at this point.
