Note 981 — Chapter IX · THE LANDS

Reading edition

Roger Bacon (Opus majus, part iv, Bridges’ edit., vol. i, pp. 229–230) discusses classical and Arabic estimates of the heights of mountains. His own opinion was that the maximum height is eight miles. See the discussion of this topic included in Benini’s interesting treatment of the altitude of Dante’s Mount of Purgatory (Origine del Monte del Purgatorio, 1917, pp. 1056–1072, especially pp. 1057–1058).
