Note 969 — Chapter IX · THE LANDS

Reading edition

Benl, Frühere und spätere Hypothesen, 1905, pp. 1–14, discusses the origin and development in antiquity and the Middle Ages of theories regarding the distribution of the principal mountain systems of the known 446world, the Taurus-Caucasus-Imaus range of Asia, the Rhipaean Mountains of the far north, and the Mountains of the Moon of Africa. The subsequent elaboration of these theories between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the conception was developed by some geographers of a symmetrical, rectilinear arrangement of the mountain ranges of the entire globe is treated by Wisotzki, Zeitströmungen, 1897, pp. 131–192, and by Benl, op. cit., pp. 15–50.
