Note 254 — Chapter II · THE CONTRIBUTION OF WESTERN CHRISTENDOM BEFORE 1100 A. D.

Reading edition

On the subject of the waters, Augustine made a statement which typifies the medieval attitude towards the authority of Scripture: “Proinde cum de isto fonte quaerimus quomodo id quod dictum est, ascendebat de terra, et irrigabat omnem faciem terrae, non impossibile videatur; si ea quae diximus impossibilia cuiquam videatur, quaerat ipse aliud, quo tamen verax ista Scriptura monstretur, quae procul dubio verax est, etiamsi non monstretur” (De Genesi ad litteram, V, 9, in: Corpus script. eccles. lat., vol. xxviii, sect. 3, pt. 1, p. 152). See also Duhem, op. cit., vol. ii, pp. 491–494.
