Note 206 — Chapter II · THE CONTRIBUTION OF WESTERN CHRISTENDOM BEFORE 1100 A. D.
Reading edition
Much has been written on St. Brandan and his wanderings. The 382Peregrinatio Sancti Brandani abbatis, or Latin version of the legend (also known as Navigatio or Narratio), the date of which is uncertain, was published by Schröder, Sanct Brandan, 1871. See also Beazley, Dawn, vol. i, 1897, pp. 230–240. More recent notable works dealing with Brandan’s voyages and with other fabulous tales of the Atlantic are Westropp, Brasil, 1912; Babcock, St. Brendan’s Islands, 1919; idem, Legendary Islands, 1922, pp. 34–49. That some of the stories of the St. Brandan legend were derived from Oriental sources (and not vice versa, as Schröder, op. cit., pp. xii-xiii, attempted to show) was demonstrated by De Goeje, St. Brandan, 1890.
