Note 1 — INDIVIDUALISM IN POLITICS AND ECONOMICS[1]

This was the introduction to The Philosophy of Individualism: A Bibliography published in 1927 by The Individualist Bookshop of London. Because it gives so compact, informative and balanced a survey of the intellectual history of individualism I am reprinting it in full. Although it was originally anonymous, I have since learned (see my own introduction) that the author was W. H. Hutt. The footnotes are also his, except one or two which are signed with my own initials.
