Note 458 — Chapter IX
Reading edition
Dispatches from Metternich to F. O., June 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 1904 (ibid., 138 ff., Nos. 6455, 6458, 6460, 6464, 6466). Cf. Mallet to Spring Rice, early summer, 1904 (Gwynn, The Letters and Friendships of Sir Cecil Spring Rice, I, 414). Mallet stated that the British government did not want to weaken the advance toward France by a settlement with Germany, especially since the Anglo-French accord had not been definitely ratified.
