Note 517 — Chapter VI · [168] DISCUSSION OF KINSHIP
Reading edition
In some cases, when the position of the father is very subordinate in the family and his relation to the mother and her children is a very loose one—it seems doubtful whether the existence of the individual family (in the sense here defined) can be accepted (compare, for examples of such peoples, Dr. Westermarck, H.H.M., p. 109, and Sir Laurence Gomme, loc. cit., pp. 231, 232). In these cases the necessary condition for individual paternal kinship according to our theory would be lacking.
