The best English book on later Byzantine history is Finlay’s History of Greece, which covers the whole period. Oman’s Byzantine Empire (‘Story of the Nations’) is a readable summary. Gibbon’s Decline and Fall must always be consulted. Schlumberger’s Un Empereur byzantin au Xe siècle, Nicéphore Phocas, and L’Epopée byzantine à la fin du Xe siècle, present attractive aspects of the subject in a recent light.
